San Juan is Capital of Puerto Rico and a Commonwealth of the United States. This island is covered with historical sites, mountains and rain forests, and is circled by mangrove swamps and beautiful beaches. Many cruise ships sailing the eastern Caribbean either embark, disembark, or stopover in San Juan, and the cruise ship pier is conveniently located in the picturesque old town. Visiting San Juan can be a history lesson, a beach getaway or a little of both. Old San Juan, a walled center dating to Puerto Rico's days as a Spanish colony, is a square mile of restored buildings, narrow streets, plazas, former forts and an oceanfront esplanade. The beaches are in the resort area of Isla Verde and in the more urban Condado. Visual and performing arts and a bustling marketplace dominate the Santurce quarter. Casinos, hip restaurants and clubs are scattered throughout the city.
